WCCC Youth Basketball League
- FAQs
The following is a list of Frequently
Asked Questions that is not intended to be comprehensive.
If you have further questions about the season or
The League please ask your Coach or Division Director.
Q: How long is the Season?
A: 10 week season starting the weekend after Thanksgiving
weekend. All games are played on Friday evening, Saturday,
or Sunday afternoon with a tournament at the end of
the season. There is one game a week for each team.
Q: When and where will my child
practice?
A: Practices are on weeknights at 6:00, 7:00, or 8:00PM
(typically younger kids practice at earlier times).
Each team practices once a week. Mini-mites practice
at the WCCC gym. All other teams practice at various
schools we have gym rental with and that are located
around the western part of Forsyth County (ex: Vienna
Elementary, Old Richmond Elementary, Lewisville Elementary).
Practices not established by the League are prohibited.
Q: Who will be coaching my child?
A: Coaches are almost always selected from parents
that sign up to coach and who are then appointed by
The Board. Typically these are parents with basketball
and/or coaching experience in other youth sports.
The WCCC coaching fraternity is a fairly close knit
group of sports minded and kid minded parents. You
will often see many of these same parents year in
and year out. Our coaches are the backbone of our
league.
Q: Who runs the League?
A: The Board of West Central Community Center Youth
Basketball League runs the League and rents the facility
from WCCC. WCCCYBL is a non-profit organization that
is all volunteer run. The Board operates based on
By-Laws that have been in place since the WCCCYBL
started 33 years ago. Parents who are interested in
becoming a part of The Board are welcome, but are
asked to participate in helping in some capacity with
the operation of the league.
Q: Who do I go to if I have
questions, complaints or suggestions?
A: Each Division has a Director whose contact information
is posted on the website:
www.wcccbasketball.net or www.wcccbasketball.org
The Division Director is the ideal place to start.
The Division Director will also have an explanation
of the rules that are unique to each division. Other
Board members are also noted on the website.
Q: Where can I see a set of
the By-Laws?
A: Right now you would have to ask a Division Director
or Board member for a copy. We are looking for someone
to help in getting them posted on the website. This
might be a great service project for your student
looking for community service credit!
Q: How is playing time determined?
A: All teams in all divisions have a 10 player maximum.
All teams in all divisions are divided into A &
B teams. Especially in the youngest divisions where
there is no free substitution, A & B teams are
divided based on ability so that similarly skilled
players are playing against one another. A & B
teams each play half the game until you get to the
Jr Midget and Midget Divisions where there is free
substitution in the second half. It is not a written
rule, but where kids are guaranteed one quarter of
play in the older age groups it is pretty much a certainty
that if a kid is not getting somewhere close to half
the game of playing time in the older divisions the
coach will be spoken to. This is rarely a problem
and if it becomes one your Division Director is the
one to speak with. All teams and coaches want to win,
but there is an overwhelming League focus on fair
play and fair playing time.
Q: How are teams made up?
A: There is a draft based on player assessments at
Tryouts. Tryouts are really about skills assessment.
There are no cuts. Everybody plays. The League has
draft rules that cover spreading the talent as evenly
as possible. There is little chance to game the system
or stack teams although it is impossible to make the
teams perfectly balanced as kids develop at different
rates throughout any one season.
